Once Upon A Time In Shanghai
Plot Synopsis
In the early 20th century, labourers from all over the country were rushing to the flourishing city of Shanghai. Ma Yongzhen (Philip Ng), a youthful man from Shandong, arrived at this prosperous city working as a dock labourer. During those days, Shanghai was shadowed by two local gangs: Axe Fraternity and Long Qi (Andy On). Long Qi, the boss of Paradise Club, was a relatively righteous man. He adored Yongzhen's amazing martial arts skills and fearless quality, and wanted to take him under his wing. However, Yongzhen would rather earn his money in an honest and hard-working way. That being said, due to common interests, Yongzhen and Qi eventually became great friends.
Qi, who refused to betray his country for the Japanese Government and opposed to the idea of drug trafficking, quickly made enemies with Axe Fraternity's gang leaders: Baldy Bai (Chan Koon-Tai), Laughing Buddha (Yuen Cheung-Yan), and Scruffy Chou (Fung Hak-On). Their hatred intensified when Yongzhen and Qi interfered with their drug trafficking business.
Yongzhen lived next door to a street performer Master Tie (Sammo Hung) and his two daughters: Tie Mei (Jiang Luxia) and Tie Ju (Michelle Hu). Yongzhen was attracted to Ju's tough personality, while Ju admired his sense of righteousness and had a good impression on Yongzhen. On the other hand, Qi was infatuated with singer, Sheng Xiangjun (Mao Junjie) , not knowing that this love would put him in danger later.
Antagonised by Qi's arrogance, the Axe Fraternity's leaders allied with the Japanese spy, Hashimoto to get rid of Qi. Qi was ambushed and executed brutally by the Japanese. Yongzhen's neighbourhood was also attacked by Axe Fraternity. By the time Yongzhen arrived, the place was already scattered with corpses. With his last breath, Master Tie told Yongzhen that Ju was kidnapped by the Axe gangs. In his deep sorrow, Yongzhen decided to intrude the Axe Fraternity's lair alone to save Ju and eradicate all evils using his bare fists...
